As we sprint towards the finish line of another eventful year, embracing the festive season and the much-anticipated holiday break, there's a crucial task on every leader's agenda: Performance Reviews.

I hear you - it often feels as appealing as a trip to the dentist. But, let's transform this! Today, I'll show you how to turn feedback sessions into gifts that your team will actually appreciate.

 

1) CHEER-Leading:

Picture a sports coach whose every word is gold to the athletes. That's because they know their coach is their biggest supporter. Start your feedback sessions on this note. Show that you’re more than a boss; you're a champion for their success. This mindset shift can make team members more receptive and open to feedback.

 

2) Be Descriptive and Create a Judgment-Free Zone:

Feedback should be clear and factual, not a subjective interpretation. Avoid broad, judgmental statements like “you’re not a team player,” which can come off as criticism. Instead, focus on specific instances, like, “When the team was working overtime on Friday, we noticed your absence.” Keep judgments out; they only lead to defensiveness. Center on specific behaviors and results, not personal traits. This approach is about growth and improvement, not personal criticism.

 

3) Empathy: The Secret Ingredient:

Listen with empathy. If a team member shares their struggles, acknowledge them. Saying something like, “I understand balancing personal commitments with work can be challenging,” shows you’re listening and empathizing. This doesn’t mean you agree with every choice they’ve made, but it demonstrates understanding and fosters a more open dialogue.

 

4) Co-Producing the Roadmap:

Involve your team in creating their improvement plan. Rather than handing down directives, encourage them to propose their own action steps. This empowers them, making them feel like authors of their professional journey, with you guiding them along the way.

 

5) Setting the Stage for Accountability:

After establishing a plan, arrange regular check-ins. This isn’t micromanagement; it’s about providing clear milestones and support. Think of it as placing guardrails on a highway – they’re there to ensure a safe  journey.

 

6) Cheer for Their Future Wins:

End on a high note. Express excitement for their upcoming achievements. It’s like saying, “I’m looking forward to seeing your progress!” This positive reinforcement can be incredibly motivating.
